The Many Faces of Peace is a wide-ranging collection of sayings and anecdotes from Torah, Talmud, and others on the topic of peace.
 

Rebbe Menachem Mendle of Kotzk once said that God used all the holy elements of the universe to cast man into existence.  One thing however could not be included in the creation of man, truth.  In order to create humanity, God had to first throw away truth.

 

 

The Midrash comments of the servant of Abraham, Eliezer.   When Laban greets Eliezer upon his arrival, he remarks that this man is surely blessed (Genesis 24:31).  Yet, how can this man, a Canaanite, possibly be blessed?  Doesn’t Laban know that this was a cursed people since the time of Noah?   Has he simply forgotten who is he is speaking with?  Has Laban been captivated by the sound of his own voice?

The Midrash answers that Laban is not mistaken: Eliezer is indeed blessed.  When Eliezer went into the service of Abraham he determined that his path of life was in another direction than his birth.  Genesis Rabba 60:7

Anyone can achieve redemption and find peace.

 

 

"Said the Holy one blessed be He: The whole Torah is peace and to whom do I give it? To the nation which loves peace!"  Yalkut Shimoni, Yithro 273

 

Great is peace, for God's name is peace.... Great is peace, for it encompasses all blessings.... Great is peace, for even in times of war, peace must be sought.... Great is peace seeing that when the Messiah is to come, He will commence with peace, as it is said, "How beautiful upon the mountains are the footsteps of the messenger of good tidings, who announces peace." Isaiah. 52:7 Leviticus Rabbah 9:9

 

Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel said, "On three things the world stands: on justice, on truth, and on peace." Rav Muna said, "These three are actually one thing: Where justice is done, truth is done and peace is made." Every place there is justice, there is peace.  Derekh Eretz Zuta, chap 2

 

The one who makes peace in his own home is akin to someone who makes peace in all Israel

Avot D’Rabbi Natan 28:3

 

“Rabbi Judah the Prince said, ‘Great is peace.  God Himself says, ‘Even if the Israelites worship idols and still maintain peace I can do nothing to them.’”

Genesis Rabbah 38:6

 

J. Robert Oppenheimer was asked at a Congressional hearing how we could best avoid a nuclear confrontation.  “Make peace,” he answered.

God placed an arc in the sky to express a covenant of peace with humanity after the Great Flood. Rabbi Eleazar said in the name of Rabbi Hanina: `Torah Scholars increase peace in the world, as it is said: `And all your children will be students of God and your children will have abundant peace' - do not read `your children (banayich)', but `your builders (bonayich)', for there is an abundant peace for the lovers of Your Torah, and there is no stumbling block for them. May there be peace within your walls, serenity within your palaces. For the sake of my brethren and my comrades, I shall speak of peace in your midst. For the sake of the House of God, I will request good for you. God will give might to His nation, and God will bless His nation with peace.' Berachot 64a

“May there be peace in your courtyard and tranquility in your palaces.”

Rabbi Baroka of Huza often went to the marketplace. One day, the prophet Elijah appeared to him there, and Rabbi Baroka asked him, "Is there anyone among all these people who will have a share in the World to Come?" Elijah answered, "There is none." Later, two men came to the marketplace, and Elijah said to Rabbi Baroka, "Those two will have a share in the World to Come!" Rabbi Baroka asked the newcomers, "What is your occupation?" They replied, "We are clowns. When we see someone who is sad, we cheer him up. When we see two people quarreling, we try to make peace between them."

"Thus shall you bless the people of Israel.  Say to them: 

The Lord bless and protect you!

The Lord deal kindly and graciously with you!

The Lord bestow His favor upon you and grant you peace!”

The whole of the Torah is for the purpose of promoting peace.

Hillel said, " Be disciples of Aaron, loving peace and pursuing peace; be one who loves others and draws them near to the Torah   Avot 1:12

 

 

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good tidings, who publishes peace.  Isaiah 52:7



The whole of the Torah is for the purpose of promoting peace.       Gittin 59b

 

 

“These are the things that a person does and enjoys their benefits in this world while the principle remains waiting for him in the World-to-Come: Honoring your parents, practicing good deeds and making peace between one person and their friend while the study of Torah surpasses them all.”   Shabbat 127a

 

 

The Rabbis taught, “Those who are insulted and do insult, hear themselves reviled and do ant respond in kind, act out of love and take heart in their suffering, of them the holy Torah says, 'But they who love Him are as the sun when it goes forth in all its strength.' "

Raba said, “If two scholars live in the same city and are intolerant of one another that provokes anger from Heaven."   Taanit 8a

 

 

Three rabbis, Huna ben Manoah, Shmuel and Hiyya of Westanya regularly attended the lectures of Raba.  They hung on his ever word.  When Raba dies they consented to attend the lessons of Rav Papa.  When it happened that they disagreed with their new master the three scholars would wink and gesture at one another.  Raba saw their actions and was deeply offended.  That night Rav Papa had a vision.  He was directed to expel them by means of a verse.

The next day when the disciples came to him and yet again humiliated the master, Rav Papa turned to them and said, “Go in peace.”  Taanit 9a

 

 

One saying goodbye to a friend should not say lech b’shalom (go in peace).  When David said to his son Abshalom, lech b’shalom (go in peace) he [Abshalom] went and was hanged.  When Jethro said to Moses lech l’shalom [go to peace] he [Moses] was successful.  Moed katan 29a

 

A favorite saying of Abaye was….one should always strive to be on the best terms with his brothers, his relatives, all men and woman as well the heathen in the street.  This assures that person that he will also be beloved Above, well-liked below, and acceptable to his fellow creatures.   Berachot 17a

 
 

It was related of Rabbi Johanan ben Zakkai that no man, even a heathen, ever greeted him first in the street.

Once two disciples were seated before their master, Bar Kappara.  Plums and chicken were set on the table before them.  Bar Kappara told one of his students to start eating.  The student then said the blessing over the fowl and proceeded to eat.  Meanwhile, the other began to laugh.

At that moment the master grew angry.  Bar Kappara said,“I am not upset with the student that said the blessing and then ate, I am angry with the other who scoffed at him.  If he is so full of joy to bless his meat and not the plums, it is not for you to make fun of him!  Berachot 39a

 

 

"What is painful to you, do not do unto others," taught Hillel.

"Whatever you hate to have done unto you, do not do to your neighbor; therefore do not hurt him; do not speak ill of him; do not reveal his secrets to others; let his honor and his property be as dear to you as thine own"

Ben Azzai taught, "The Torah, by beginning with the book of the generations of man, laid down the great rule for the application of the Law: Love thy neighbor as thyself"

Rabbi Simlai taught "Six hundred and thirteen commandments were given to Moses; then David came and reduced them to eleven in Psalms; Isaiah to six; Micah to three; Isaiah again to two; and Habakkuk to one: 'The just lives by his faithfulness'"

"When you come near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it."

"These are the things that are taught because they are the ways of peace. The Kohen reads the first portion and after him the Levi reads and after him the Israelite reads because of ways of peace."

While crossing a stream, Rabbi Yossi stepped on some worms and exclaimed that he wished such creatures did not exist. At this, his master Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai declared that it is forbidden to disparage or to kill any creature, for they all serve to a purpose of the Maker in the world.

"An individual may not go out (on the Sabbath) bearing a sword or a spear (because these are implements of war). Rabbi Eliezer argues that these armaments are ornaments (which may be worn). The Sages maintain, they are disgraceful objects for those who wear them, the Holy Text teaches, "they shall beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks"."
