A Beginning
Now, ask the beasts and they teach you;
The birds of the sky will teach you.
Speak to the earth: It will teach you;
Or the fish of the deep and they will reveal it to you.
Who cannot learn from all these
That God's hand has done all this?
In His hand is every living soul;
The breath of all human kind.
-God, speaking to Job
Hitbodedute: The wellspring of truth from the concealed places of the heart. Rebbe Nachman
Being alone is not the same as being lonely. In the practice of hitbodedute we bring ourselves to face God alone. Quietly, we take time to open our hearts and speak to the Holy One, blessed be He. Not traditional prayers but the words spoken are directed to God that share our innermost thoughts. Hitbodedute is spoken in our own language, whatever tongue that is.
What do we say? How do we find the words to offer up before the Almighty?
Be quiet. Allow your heart to speak the words that are usually only thought. Talk to God of your wants, hopes and shame. Start by speaking of your failures and verbalize your triumphs.
Idea: It is traditional to life up one's hands after washing in preparation for saying the blessing for bread. Orach Hayim
At the time when a Jew is about to say HaMotsie in preparation of eating bread they are supposed to wash and then lift their hands up to so draw in light and holiness.
Be aware of your body. It too should be part of your prayers. That is why we cry out during the morning service, "All my limbs shall proclaim Lord..." Pray with your mind, soul and even the husk itself which houses all these parts. When you next pray feel the power of the tefilah course through your hands, legs and torso. That is why Jews sway when they daven. Offer God words from each part of your self. Find a holy prayer and let its strength be expressed through your limbs.
